Inscription. In 1894, Commodore Charles Burgoyne traveled from New York City by train to retire in Daytona Beach. Charles became known for his outstanding public spirit and good heart by hosting community events and contributing food and gifts to the school children. He built a beautiful Esplanade with nighttime lighting and a casino that was a major social hall, and donated the transformed riverfront to the City.
