As industrialization increased, steam-boiler explosions frequently caused fatalities and extensive damage. In January 1866, 22 entrepreneurs from Baden founded the “Association for the Inspection and Insurance of Steam Boilers”—the TÜV—in Mannheim. Since then, the regular professional inspection of steam boilers, and later of other industrial installations and even vehicles, has helped ensure safety.
