Inscription.

The violinist Ignaz Fränzl lived in an earlier building on this site until the end of the 18th century. During Mannheim’s period as an electoral residence under Elector Karl Theodor from 1743 to 1778, the city was a European musical center. The “Mannheim School” first gained recognition beyond the region because of the breathtaking precision of the Electoral Palatinate court orchestra. The orchestra owed much of its quality to the Bohemian-born violinist and composer Johann Stamitz (1717–1757), who was also a gifted teacher. The court orchestra produced several composers, including Christian Cannabich (1731–1798), Ignaz Holzbauer (1711–1783) and Franz Xaver Richter (1709–1789), whose work contributed to the fame of the “Mannheim School.” Ignaz Fränzl also trained at the orchestral school founded by Stamitz. He first became court music director and, in 1778, the first musical director of what later became the National Theatre Orchestra. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) also praised Fränzl’s violin playing in his letters.
The “Mannheim School” remains strongly represented in the city’s musical life. The Stamitz Orchestra, founded in 1921 and shown here performing in the palace’s historic Knights’ Hall in 1930, deliberately honored this tradition through its name.
Property layout of the present-day C 3 square in 1774. At that time, the squares and houses were still numbered consecutively, so C 3, 5 was house No. 1266 in square No. 77 in 1774.
Ignaz Fränzl (1736–1811), violinist and court music director, remained in Mannheim after the court moved to Munich, unlike most of his colleagues.
