Trolleys in Macedon
Macedon Bicentennial
Construction began in 1904 at a cost of seven million dollars. The cars weighed seventy-eight thousand pounds and had four motors, each having a capacity of one hundred and twenty-five horsepower. The trolleys were built to seat sixty two people. There were so many commuters, that straps were installed to accommodate more people. The trolleys ran for 86 miles, parallel to the canal. In addition to passengers the trolleys would transport produce, milk and fruit. The 3pm car also brought the evening papers to nearby towns.
"John Shrader, long time resident of Macedon, described the early days of his youth, when he worked with the Shields Company. He and his team were hired at four dollars a day to do grading work on the road bed of the trolley line. The first actual grading started in September 1904, between Macedon and Palmyra in the flats of Mud Creek" (The Rochester, Syracuse and Eastern Railroad, by Krista Vanderwall, March 24, 1976).
There was a ticket office in each village. Macedon's was located in a building on the south side of Main Street. On Monday morning, July 3, 1906, the RS&E began carrying passengers between Newark and Macedon. The rate from Macedon to Palmyra was ten cents. The trolley was sold in 1931 and was replaced by the Greyhound Bus Line
