1. Main Street Marker
A longstanding fixture on Main Street was the Olson & Lowe clothing store. The store first opened its doors in October of 1900 and was in business for over 100 years in the same location on Main Street. The store expanded with more than a dozen stores in Minnesota and the Dakotas. The Marshall store served as the anchor. The Skramstad family owned the store from the early 1950's to the time of its closing.
"Fancy shops like Stone's had a little balcony in the back of the store where the cashier or bookkeeper sat. Overhead in the ceiling hung wire cables running down to the counter. These carried a little basket. When you made a purchase, the money was placed in the basket, the storekeeper pulled a handle hanging down from the cable, and your money was whisked skyward back to the cashier. She made change and sent it back via the little trolley. Really, this was state of the art."
