Luitpoldplatz
⎯⎯⎯
Kriegerdenkmal
Inscription.
Luitpoldplatz
At the transition from the old town to the new, rectangularly laid-out district created during the construction of the fortress, 19th-century city planners placed Luitpold Square. It was bordered by the fortress governor’s official building, with sentry boxes for the guard in front of it. The photograph was taken in the 1880s.
Kriegerdenkmal
This photograph from around 1900 shows the rectangular street layout created during the construction of the fortress in the area of Hauptstraße and Königstraße. At that time, Luitpold Square, visible on the right, marked the junction between the old and new parts of the city. Opposite it stood the government building, now the Protestant deanery, with a sentry standing guard in front. This was also the location of the memorial to the fallen Germersheim participants in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. On the right is the “Restauration zum deutschen Kaiser,” one of the city’s largest inns in the years before the First World War. The VR Bank building now stands on this site.
