Inscription. Quite possibly the yew's antecedents were witness to pagan worship long before Christianity arrived in Britain.

The size and age of this tree has certainly been a subject of wonder and discussion for centuries.

The trunk diameter was measured at 3 yards in 1644; in 1787 it was said to be in decline; but in 1849 it was still robust and calculated by experts to have been planted in AD464.

By 1976 the trunk was mainly hollow, and broke during a gale; thankfully some of the roots survived, to nurture what we see today.

Analysis in 1985 suggested the yew was over two thousand years old. In 2016 it was certified to be certainly over one thousand years old.

Please do leave the yew to quietly flourish for future generations to enjoy.
