Inscription.
J.C. Stewart (1844-1906) attended school until the age of 16 in Pennsylvania. A veteran of the Civil War, he moved to Webb City in 1876. His uncle S.L. Manker (1829-1900) lived here and Joseph worked for him in the grocery business before he became rich in mining, lumber and banking. He started the Center Creek Mining Company and was in the lumber business with his brother W.C.. He also organized the Exchange Bank. Marrying Hortense Street, a Webb City school teacher, they would raise three children: Cora, Robert and Joseph. J.T. Steele had been in the mortuary and furniture business since 1888. Steele would move to the Stewart home in 1920 and convert it for his business. Over the years different owners have enclosed the porches, changed the entryways and enclosed the garages.
