Harry S Truman, 33rd President of the United States, was born in this house on May 8, 1884. His parents, John and Martha Truman, purchased the home in 1882 for $685. John Truman earned his livelihood trading horses and mules. When Harry was 11 months old, the Trumans moved north to Harrisonville, Mo., in Cass County. John Truman planted an Austrian pine and nailed a mule shoe above the front door in observance of his son's birth. The tree was removed, but a cross section is available to view in the park office. The United Auto Workers donated the home to the Missouri state park system in 1959. President Truman attended the dedication of his birthplace as a state historic site.
