Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula
Discover the Palace story
There has been a chapel on the spot to your left for a thousand years. King Henry VIII built the current chapel in 1520 after the original burnt down. It is still a working chapel with regular services.
Many of the Tower’s former residents and some of the executed prisoners, such as Anne Boleyn, are buried in the Chapel or beneath the grass outside.

Three queens of England have been laid to rest here at St Peter ad Vincula: Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey. They were executed in different places within the Tower, but are commemorated with a memorial on Tower Green...Alongside the Queens, the Chapel is also the burial place of two Saints: the Bishop of Rochester, John Fisher and Henry VIII’s chief advisor, Thomas More. They were executed in 1535 for refusing to declare the King the Supreme Head of the Church. Again, however, we can’t be certain of their exact burial place.(Submitted on September 27, 2026, by Ian Lefkowitz of New York, New York.)
