1. Welcome to the Job Armstrong Shopkeeper's Garden Marker
This garden reflects the working life of a 19th-century Rhode Island shopkeeper and the family who rented the space above the shop when small plots behind stores and homes were essential for providing food, herbs, medicine, and useful plants for daily living. The plants in this garden demonstrate the kinds of plants that might have been growing during this era. In addition to these essentials, ornamental plants that flowered were prized.
Today, the produce grown here is donated to the Glocester Senior Center, continuing a tradition of usefulness and community care.
,br> Look for the plant signs placed throughout the garden. Each one shares an interesting fact about how a common 19th-century garden plant helped people cook, heal, preserve food, or manage daily life
