Lynn Township School
In 1885, this balloon framed one-room schoolhouse was built in Lynn Township at the corner of Speaker Road and Sterling Road across from the present-day Lynn Township Hall.
Few alterations have been made to the structure. The schoolhouse was wired for electricity in 1936. In 1951, a forced air gas heating furnace was installed to replace the coal stove. The original building plans did not include the shed addition at the rear of the building which was probably constructed in 1952 to house bathrooms with modern plumbing.
The building was actively used until it was consolidated into the Yale Area Schools in 1956. The building was moved to Yale in 1969, where it was restored and used as the Heritage School and mini-museum for the school district.
The Yale School District donated the building to St. Clair County in 1998. The school was moved in one piece to its current site that same year. During the move, all the items that were in the school were left in place, including pictures on the walls.
In 1999, the building was placed on a new foundation and the belfry reinstalled. The interior was restored to its late 19th century appearance in 2008. Today the school is popular for class field trips and is available for group tours.
