Henry Emmett (Heinie) Manush
July 20, 1901 - May 12, 1971
Heinie was born at the family home, 1005 East Third Street, Tuscumbia, Alabama to George and Catherine Manush, the youngest of eight children. Five of the seven brothers were involved in organized baseball, with two going to the Major Leagues. His baseball career spanned forty-two years from 1921-1962. In 1923, he was called to the Detroit Tigers as an outfielder to relieve Player/Manager, Ty Cobb. He was constantly ranked among the top hitters, ending his career with a .330 batting average. He hit over 300 for eleven of fifteen full seasons with six Major League teams. He won the American League batting title in 1926, edging out Babe Ruth by six points to end the year with a .378 average, and keeping Ruth from winning the Triple Crown.
In 1928, Heinie led the American League with 241 hits. Until 2004, Heinie and Babe Ruth were tied for tenth place with most hits in a season, 241. In 1933, he had thirty-three consecutive games with a hit and led that year in hits and triples, which helped the Washington Senators get to the World Series. He played in the All-Star Game in 1934.
After retiring as a player, Heinie was a Minor League Manager, a Major League Coach and Scout.
Heinie was the first Alabamian to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown in 1964. The same year he was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame. He was posthumously inducted into the Alabama Hall of Fame in 1972 and was in the Inaugural Class of the Colbert County Hall of Fame in 2000. The Tuscumbia City Council proclaimed October 24, 1997 as "Heinie Manush Day".
Colbert County Historical Landmarks Foundation, Inc. presented a plaque to the family, which hangs at Heinie Manush Field, Deshler High School, Tuscumbia.
