1782–1852

Daniel Webster
1782–1852

American lawyer and statesman. He was an ardent philhellene. As a congressman at the time of the Greek War of Independence, he advanced initiatives in support of the Greek cause. In an iconic address to the House of Representatives on 19 January 1824, he eloquently reminded his colleagues of the influence of the ancient Greek civilization on American democracy and the consequent U.S. duty to assist the Greek revolutionaries.
