Oliver Cromwell
The Cromwell Museum is housed in Huntingdon's oldest building, parts of which date back to c.1160, when it was built to provide overnight accommodation to travellers coming through the town. From 1565 it became the town's grammar school, providing an education to the sons of Huntingdon's freemen. Oliver Cromwell was a schoolboy there between 1610 and 1616.
Another famous student at the grammar school was Samuel Pepys, who lived with his uncle during the early years of the Civil Wars of the 1640s. Pepys is best known today for his famous diary, in which he recorded the Plague and Great Fire of London, but also mentioned having been educated in Huntingdon. Pepys worked for Cromwell as a civil servant in the 1650s.
All Saints' Church contains the Cromwell family vault in which Oliver Cromwell's father, Robert, and his grandfather, Sir Henry, are buried. Sir Henry built Hinchingbrooke House on the outskirts of the town, which is today a secondary school, but is open for tours each summer.
Oliver Cromwell moved from Huntingdon to St Ives in 1631, then later to Ely. He returned to Huntingdon at the outbreak of Civil War in 1642 and used The Falcon Inn as his headquarters whilst he recruited the first troop of his famous cavalry, nicknamed 'Ironsides', here.

Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English statesman and soldier, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in British history. He came to prominence during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, initially as a senior commander in the Parliamentarian army and later as a politician. A leading advocate of the execution of Charles I in January 1649, which led to the establishment of the Commonwealth of England, Cromwell ruled as Lord Protector from December 1653 until his death in September 1658.(Submitted on October 3, 2026.)
Cromwell's historical reputation is continually debated. He is a controversial figure due to his use of military force to acquire and retain political power, his role in the execution of Charles I, and the brutality of his 1649 conquest of Ireland. Winston Churchill described Cromwell as a military dictator, while others view him a hero of liberty.
