Beccles in Suffolk, England, United Kingdom — Northwestern Europe (the British Isles)
The Priest's Door
The structure above the porch may be a rare outside pulpit, used to enable the priest to preach to people in the churchyard. It may also have been used for ceremonial purposes and in religious drama. St Paul's Cathedral, London, has an exterior pulpit, known as 'Paul's Cross'.
On the left of the porch, as you view it from the outside, is the tomb of Dr Henry Fauconberge, by whose will the Fauconberge School was founded. It flourished in Beccles from 1770 to the early 20th century. His coat of arms bears a lion from the Bruce family of Scotland, ancestors of the Fauconberges.
