The Bell Garden
Gentian Garden Club
The Richmond Mill, built in 1812, was located in the town of Scituate, Rhode Island in the now lost village of Richmond until it was displaced by the Scituate Reservoir in the 1920s. The mill manufactured laces for corsets and shoes. The Richmond Bell rang twice daily, once to call folks to start work, and again to signify the end of the work day.
Members of the Gentian Garden Club saw an opportunity to showcase this historic bell by surrounding it with plants. In 2022, together with the Scituate Department of Public Works, club members planned the garden, cleared the space and planted a variety of native species to highlight the importance of using these plants in our gardens. Members of the Gentian Garden Club continue to nurture and maintain this award-winning garden.

The Gentian Garden Club's Bell Garden was awarded the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs Marilyn M. Sheehan Award and the New England Garden Federation Sears Civic Beautification Award.
