Inscription. The Sherwood family emigrated from England in 1832. Elenzer was born in Nassagawaya, Canada West in 1842. He married in 1868 and established a grocery on the Main Street. Tragedy struck in 1871 when Typhoid fever took his wife and child. Remarried, Elenzer built this three-storey building in 1879 with apartments on the upper levels. Along with his General Store, Elenzer's wife Margaret operated a Milliner and Hat Shop. William and Mary Perry purchased the building in 1901 when the Sherwoods left for the USA. William and later Malcolm Perry were landlords for seven decades with tenants including grocers and clothing stores. Rudi Noss' Department Store opened in 1972, and this is also the original site of the Mount Forest Thrift Store until 2019 when RAM computers and Tools became tenant to Thomas Meyer.
