At the gun platform level, the projectiles were loaded onto an ammunition track. Soldiers then pushed the truck with the projectiles to the breech for loading into the cannon. Gun crews could quickly load and fire the large 10- and 12-inch weapons at Fort Mott in relative safety. One distinct advantage of the disappearing carriage was that the gun always recoiled to the same position relative to the concrete platform behind the carriage. This made it possible to load the weapon directly from the wheeled shot trucks on which the ammunition was bourght from the electric hoist. Guns could thus be fired rapidly, with crack crews firing two rounds a minute.
