Fort Scott in Bourbon County, Kansas — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Fort Scott dragoon soldiers
When you travel a great distance, how do you get there? In the 1840s, dragoon soldiers were stationed at Fort Scott to patrol the frontier. Trained to fight on horseback and on foot, the dragoons were often called on to travel great distances away from the fort to patrol the overland trails. They were the special forces of their time, charged with "keeping the peace" on the frontier.
