Inscription.
William Gruer was born in Braemar, Scotland. As a youth he apprenticed as a carpenter on the Scottish estate of Charles Stewart. William came to Canada West with the Stewarts in 1856. He settled in Mount Forest and established his shop on the lot currently occupied by the Public Library. Gruer built residential and commercial buildings including this three-storey structure with a mansard roof. The three merchant storefronts were eventually merged into Freiburger's Grocery which became Foodland. The corner store began as a dry goods store and then George Langdon's Garage in 1920 with gas pumps outside on the corner. From 1935 to 1958, it housed Grigg Co. Ltd 5˘ to $1 store and later Smithson's 5˘ and Dime followed by Triangle Discount. Walsh's Health and Lifestyle Centre bought the space in 2017.
