World War II
The "Good" War
Seldom in the annnals of human combat has there been a stronger case made for war. With the globe still licking its wounds from the "War to End All Wars" and Great Depression, the Axis Powers seized the opportunity to impose their sadistic brand of tyranny on the world. America rose to the challenge, and some 13,000 Bay Staters paid the ultimate sacrifice to make the world safe for democracy. Their names are enshrined within a memorial on the main deck of the battleship Massachusetts.
Korean War
The Forgotten War
With the failed policies of isolationism and Nazi appeasement still fresh in their minds, the newly chartered United Nations decided that aggression on the Korean peninsula could not be ignored, lest the world be emboiled in a new world war. Once more, America led her allies into battle, with nearly 900 Massachusetts citizens perishing in what would later be dubbed, "The Forgotten War." These brave souls are permanently memorialized on board Destroyer Kennedy.

Red Scare reared its head in another distant land. Fought largely by the offspring of the Greatest Generation, the Vietnam War evolved into one of the longest and most polarizing conflicts in American history and a defining event of the "Baby Boomers." In all, some 58,000 Americans gave their lives in the jungles of Vietnam, including more than 1300 Bay Staters who are honored on board Destroyer Kennedy.
Gulf War
The Desert War
The lessons of Vietnam were still fresh in the minds of US military leaders when Saddam Hussein stormed into Kuwait in 1990; many had served in that unpopular conflict and felt frustrated by the absence of a clear strategy to win. Unhampered by that obstacle in the Gulf War, the American-led coalition stormed over the Iraqi mmilitary and secured a swift victory. Eight Massachusetts service personnel perished in the Gulf War, and they are honored on a memorial on board the USS Massachusetts.
