Clive of India Statue
Major-General Robert Clive M.P.,
1st Baron Clive KB, FRS 1725-1774
Clive of India
Clive was born near Market Drayton in 1725. He arrived in India in 1744 after his father acquired a position for him as a Clerk with the East India Company. Clive rose through the ranks as the company began to seize control of most of the Indian subcontinent for the British Empire.
During short periods when he returned home, Clive pursued a successful political career. His new wealth allowed him to buy property and purchase political influence in Cornwall and Bishop's Castle. Clive died on 22 November 1774 at his London home.
A controversial figure
Lord Clive's actions on behalf of the East India Company and the profits extracted by him and the Company, resulted in the plundering of India and inflicted famine, poverty and other atrocities upon the people of India.
Clive is a figure whose actions, both at home and abroad, have always been controversial. During his lifetime he was openly criticised with Parliament opening an inquiry into his behaviour and the practices of the East India Company. Back in Britain he was also implicated in electoral corruption, using his wealth to exert pressure and buy favour.
The statue
In 1856 local veterinary surgeon William Litt started a campaign to honour Lord Clive with a statue in Shrewsbury.
His suggestion gained support and a committee was established to raise the funds. However, even as subscriptions were being sought, the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) led to questions about whether it should be erected. As a result, funds fell short and the vision for the monument was scaled back. This statue was unveiled on 18 January 1860.
