Regarding 40 Willett Street. Edward Bowditch was a partner in Rathbone & Sard, Albany’s major stove-manufacturing firm, and lived at 40 Willett Street in the late nineteenth century. Albany Architecture identifies 40 and 42 Willett as a pair of Queen Anne-style houses dating from 1877 and notes that they form an architectural link with the nearby houses at 38 and 44 Willett designed by Potter & Robertson. Bowditch was known within the Pruyn family as “Uncle Eddy”; Huybertie Pruyn later recalled childhood activities along this stretch of Willett Street. Next door at 42 lived Gen. Robert Shaw Oliver, who was also associated with Rathbone, Sard & Company, making the adjoining houses home to two men connected with one of Albany’s important nineteenth-century industries.
