Memorial to ‘The Liverpool Pals’
Unveiled 8th September 2019 by
The Right Honourable The Earl of Derby DL

Between August and November 1914, men from the business community in Liverpool answered Lord Derby’s call for volunteers to join the Liverpool Pals.

They became the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th Battalions of the Kings Liverpool Regiment. So many volunteered that two reserve battalions (21st and 22nd) were also formed.

They fought with distinction at some of the major battles of the Great War including the Somme, Arras and Passchendaele and also held the line during the German Spring Offensive of 1918. The 17th Battalion then saw active service in Russia between October 1918 and September 1919.

Over 2800 men died in the Liverpool Pals during the course of the Great War and the campaign in Russia.

The remainder returned home, many wounded, to pick up the pieces of their lives.

They were the very first ‘Pals’ battalions to be formed and the last to be stood down.

This memorial is placed here in grateful recognition of their sacrifice and to ensure that they are truly — Not Forgotten.
