Regarding Rudolph Schiller Photographic Gallery. Originally constructed in 1869 as a one-story adobe building, it served as the photography studio for Rudolph Schiller (1839–1924), an early German-born pioneer who was actively photographing the San Diego region as early as 1868. His studio captured vital early visual records of the developing settlement.
The property was formally designated as a historical landmark by the San Diego Historical Resources Board on February 25, 1998. The landmark's name traces a timeline of historical residents, owners, and creators, including Rudolph Schiller, Paul Connors, Mary Nieves Machado Stewart, and Chris and Charlotte Anderson.
Rather than representing just one era, the residence stands as a living embodiment of the multi-ethnic, social, and economic changes that shaped the residential history of Old Town San Diego over a span of nearly 70 years (1869–1938).
