El Cariso Memorial
Decker Fire/Stewart Fire/Loop Fire
California Wildland Firefighters Memorial
Each year thousands of wildfires are fought in California. Each year, hundreds of firefighters are injured protecting public and private property, and natural resources from destruction. Almost every year, a few firefighters die.
On August 8, 1959, seven firefighters were killed in the line of duty while battling the Decker Canyon fire. The location where the firefighters' mortal injuries were recieved is locted within a mile of the memorial site.
The Memorial has three parts. First, in 2000 the state legislature designated the Ortega Highway (SR-74) as the "California Wildland Firefighters Memorial Highway." Secondly, the Cleveland National Forest dedicated a memorial picnic ground adjacent to the highway. Finally, a monument is being built in this location to honor California wildland firefighters.
