Wales Township in Goodells in St. Clair County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
C.C. Peck Bank
In 1908, Cecil C. Pack built this bank building in downtown Goodells. At the same time, he built two other identical banks in Lambs and in Smiths Creek.
Peck was well known throughout the county. He served as the president of the Port Huron Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Chairman of the Board for the Peerless Egyptian Cement Company and for Pressed Metals of America.
Peck was a banker by trade. He served as president of the American Savings and Loan in Port Huron before opening several smaller banks in rural St. Clair County, including this one in Goodells.
The Great Depression hit Peck and his banking operations hard. There was an attempt to rob his bank in Goodells, ending in a shoot out with the police. In 1932, C.C. Peck's banks at Lambs, Smiths Creek and Goodells were abruptly closed.
The bank closings were followed by the abrupt disappearance of Cecil Peck. Deposits from the bank were also reported missing. Sometime later, Peck was found living in the western United States, where he continued to live until his death in 1960.
After the bank closed, the building was used by a phone company, and several other small businesses ranging from a TV repair shop to a video rental store. In 2005, the bank was donated to the historical village by Matthew Falk. The bank was moved to the park and restored to its original appearance. The Wales Historical Society now uses the building as a museum for the Wales Township area.
