In honor of SSG William R. Fritsche B Troop, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment Killed in Action 29 July 2007 while engaged with enemy ground forces near Kamu
Ambush At Saret Koleh, Afghanistan
On 27 July 2007 at approximately 0800 Z, while serving as a Squad Leader with Bravo Company, 1-91 Cavalry Regiment, Army Staff Sergeant William R. Fritsche was conducting operations and reconnaissance in the vicinity of Saret Koleh, Afghanistan. The mission was to establish observation posts and conduct a village assessment and leader engagement in Saret Koleh.
During the operation, Sergeant Fritsche's squad came under attack by a strong enemy force positioned not more than 15 meters away. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Fritsche provided suppressive fire to allow the remaining men in his squad to seek cover. Sergeant Fritsche's courageous and heroic actions enabled his small recon unit to break contact with the enemy and link up with the rest of the platoon. Near the end of the firefight, Sergeant Fritsche was fatally wounded by the enemy forces. For his bravery and courageous actions, Sergeant Fritsche was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart.
