Franklin in Crawford County, Kansas — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Company Store
The company store was the heart of every coal camp, providing families with groceries, clothing, tools, and other everyday necessities. Most miners purchased their goods using coal scrip - company-issued currency that could be spent only at the company store. For many mining families, the store was more than a place to shop; it was an important gathering place within the community.
