Regarding 414 Madison Avenue. Regarding William M. Bender and the Development of Madison Avenue

William M. Bender was an Albany grocer, merchant, and real estate developer who helped shape the neighborhood around the intersection of Madison Avenue and Lark Street during the second half of the nineteenth century.

According to Albany Architecture: A Guide to the City, Bender was active in developing the neighborhood between 1857 and 1884. Although his other buildings in the immediate area were constructed of brick, in 1863 he built the adjoining frame houses at 414 and 416 Madison Avenue.

The two houses illustrate the varied character of residential development in this part of Albany.

Their relatively restrained appearance contrasts with the more elaborate brick buildings associated with Bender's other development activities. The surviving pair also provides a tangible reminder of the role played by local merchants and property owners in shaping Albany's expanding nineteenth-century neighborhoods.
