Inscription. The Bluecoat is the oldest building in Liverpool city centre. It opened in 1717 as a charity school, relocating to Wavertree in 1906. Many of the school’s early supporters made their money through the trade in enslaved African people. Following threats of demolition the building was saved in 1927, becoming the UK’s first bespoke arts centre.

Opposite The Bluecoat is The Athenaeum, a private members club founded in 1799 as a library and newsroom for Liverpool’s merchants and professionals. Nearby was the Liverpool Academy. Opening in 1834, it exhibited work by leading British artists of the day including the Pre-Raphaelites.
