Leibnizhaus

Leibniz House
Newly constructed between 1981 and 1983, the façade is modelled on the original Leibniz house which was destroyed in 1943 during the war. Built in 1652 in Schmiedestrasse in the late Renaissance style with early Baroque elements of half-timbering and Obernkirchen sandstone, the original building was considered one of the most impressive German town houses. The second and third floors were home to both philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz from 1698 until his death in 1716 and the electoral court library until 1719. Actor, playwright and theatre director August Wilhelm Iffland was born there in 1759. Today, the Leibniz house is a joint guest house and conference centre for the Hannover universities.
