Oshkosh in Garden County, Nebraska — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Bar and Pool Hall
| — | Old Town Historical Plaque | — |
This building has served as a bar and pool hall for most of its life. Hattie Woolf owned the land in 1907 after purchasing it from the A. Sudman Company. Isaac Woolf owned the land from 1907-1923; George Polk bought it in 1923 and sold it to James J. Caslin in 1925. In 1926, Mr. Caslin built a bar and pool hall. Mark, Frank and Jim Caslin owned and ran the place until Sadie Suit (Caslin) inherited it in 1940.
Bill Englert bought the business from Frank Caslin and added a bowling alley. Bob Erb remembered setting pins by hand in the late 1930's. Mr. Englert ran the business until he passed away. Jim Perkins and Gale Brooks ran the business in the 1940's. Don and Irma Martin leased the building in 1957 and continued the bar and pool hall until 1972. The Martins sold the business to William and Millie Hobbie. The Hobbies bought the building in 1975 from Mrs. Dorothy Hoover and Cecil Suit, Sadie Caslin's children.
By 1957, when the Martins bought the business, there was no longer a bowling alley. Mike and Joanne Allen bought the building and business in 1985 and ran it as a bar and pool hall until its closing in 2007. Cathy Wellman purchased the building in 2013, opening Goose Feathers featuring antiques, collectibles, and Nebraska products. Considering the age of this building, it has had few owners but many businesses.
Erected 2014 by Old Town Project and 2010 Garden County Centennial Planning Committee.
