Kreuzkirche

Church of the Cross
Construction of the Gothic church began in 1320, it was consecrated in 1333. After the Church of Saint Aegidien and the Market Church it was the newest church foundation in the medieval town. The spire collapsed after a storm in 1630. It was restored in 1651–54, with one of the first lantern domes in the region of Lower Saxony. Badly damaged during the Second World War (in 1943). Rebuilt 1959–61 after plans by Ernst Witt. Named “Royal and Municipal Church of St. Crucis” in 1960, it became the focal point for the surrounding city district (rebuilt 1949–51) and the Lutheran student chaplaincy. The church contains the city’s oldest tombstone, inscribed for Thidericus de Rintelen (died 1321), and an altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder (before 1537), both originally from the now demolished royal chapel.
