“Trusting in you, we will continue on our way …”
From an address by Paul Tibbets, commander of the Enola Gay, before the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
Body photogram, 2015, by Ditmar Schädel (born 1960 in Stade)
Ditmar Schädel’s work was installed for the commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the destruction of Hannover’s twin city, Hiroshima. Resembling a gravestone, this photogram shows the outlines of a human body. The negative shadow refers to the traces of people left by the atomic weapon’s intense flash, visible only as shadows on paving stones or building walls in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The work’s title quotes pilot Paul Tibbets shortly before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
Erected by Landeshauptstadt Hannover.
