Inscription.
At one time there were five newspapers in Garden County. The Garden County News actually began in 1909 at Lewellen. Clark and Buren Briggs bought the Garden County News from Charles L. and Mary Tomppert on June 1, 1936. They also bought the West Nebraska Beacon so they owned the only paper in Garden County. Beginning in the Quelle Building at 185 West Avenue D, they moved the paper to this building in 1945. They bought the building from Floyd Ferrell and completely renovated the building, inside and out.

In April 1947, William and Lois Greenlee and Charles Greenlee bought the News. The paper soon went from printing 1,000 papers to 1,600. In February 1954, William and Lois bought out Charles and ran the News until 1979. William Greenlee, Jr., sold it to Neb-Col Newspapers, Inc., with Kevin Wilkins as Manager. From 1947 to 1975 the printing process changed dramatically and the News kept up going from handset to linotype to offset printing. Kate Wells Taylor was the longest serving news correspondent working for Briggs and Greenlee gathering the Lewellen news.

The News was then sold to Oshkosh Publishing, Inc. in 1987. Jim
