Port Royal in Montgomery County, Tennessee — The American South (East South Central)
Blacksmith Shop & Warehouse
ca. 1787 - ca. 1835
The Wilcox family were among the founders of Port Royal. They settled here in 1787 and quickly established a store and blacksmith shop. Town founders established Port Royal on the lands of Samuel Wilcox in 1797. Smauel's son, John, added a tobacco warehouse to business endeavors. This foreshadowed the significance of the tobacco economy to the Red River valley. The blacksmith, warehouse, ferry landing, and Wilcox residence were all in this vicinity. The last known record of Wilcox engaging in the blacksmith business was in 1835.
