The Lower Saxony state archive was built from 1712/13 under the direction of the court master builder Johann Caspar Borchmann as the electoral library and archives of the Welf principalities of Calenberg and Lüneburg. A floor and a south wing were added in 1889/93. Damaged by bombs in 1943 and the flooding of the river Leine in 1946. Renovated and refurbished several times after the construction of the storage facility in Pattensen in 1972 and the relocation of the State Library in 1976. Today, it is the oldest archive building still in use as such in Germany.
