1. Buoyant Mine Marker
Inscription. Mines came into use at the turn of the century as part of a new system of seacoast defense. A minefield could be laid in the main ship channel in time of war and remain harmless until electrically detonated from Fort Moultrie. The minefield, however, had to be protected from minesweepers by rapid-fire batteries such as Bingham and McCorkle.
