Inscription. Hailed by historian Ida Tarbell as America's "most important industrial town," with homes owned by the workers. Founded 1895 by George G. McMurtry, president, Apollo Iron and Steel Company Named for Captain Jacob J. Vandergrift, and designed by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted.

Erected 1990 by Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
