Caroline Quiner "Ma" Ingalls Birthplace
Caroline Quiner, mother of Laura Ingalls Wilder author of the Little House series of books, was born in a cabin here, December 12, 1839. Caroline was the earliest known settler born in the Town of Brookfield. Her parents, Henry N. Quiner and Charlotte Tucker, purchased 80 acres north of this intersection on November 5, 1839. Henry Quiner died in 1845 in a shipwreck on Lake Michigan. The family moved in 1847 to Concord in Jefferson County where Caroline met and married Charles Ingalls.
