Gen. John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I, was known for his high standards and for personally recognizing exceptional bravery. In 1918, he publicly honored ten U.S. Army soldiers whose acts of valor he deemed so extraordinary that they would “live forever” in his memory — hence the nickname “Immortal Ten”
