Inscription. This two-story brick building in the Italianate style was one of several shop/warehouses in Victoria’s warehouse district. Originally occupied by W.J. Jeffree, pioneer clothier, the building later housed F.R. Stewart & Co. Provisioners.

The historic photograph shows boxes and local produce waiting on the sidewalk for delivery by F.R. Stewart’s horse-drawn delivery wagon.

Splendid cast iron columns, made at the Albion Iron Works in Victoria support the building and are dated on their bases. The neighbouring building at 564 Yates once had matching columns, a fact explained by common ownership by the Watkins family of Portland, Oregon.
