Regarding S. H. Kress and Co. Building. Built in 1927 as part of the S. H. Kress & Co. department store chain, the four-story, 39,000-square-foot building was designed in the Beaux Arts style. The structure was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on October 1, 2001.
Additionally, the Kress building is a Contributing Structure within the Downtown St. Petersburg Historic District (a National Historic District).
The Kress company went out of business in 1981. The building continues to function as a retail/commercial property. At the time of this marker's entry in the database, the Kress building houses an oriental rug gallery. In September, 2011, it was announced that a restaurant will also be opening in the
building.
