Former Scotia Mayor and village trustee William Seyse led an effort over the year prior to the marker's unveiling at 528 Charles St., in front of Deitchers boyhood home, in order to get the composer recognition. The $1,000 it took to get the marker was raised locally with donations.
Regarding Robert Allen Deitcher. Famous composer Robert Allen Deitcher lived here at 528 Charles Street in Scotia from 1939-45 and graduated from Scotia high school in 1945. Deitcher, known professionally as Robert Allen, wrote songs and arrangements for many of pop cultures greatest singers including Perry Como, Arthur Godfrey, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday, Mitch Miller, Carol Burnett and Doris Day. His songs have sold more than 500 million copies including such hits as “Chances Are,” “Its Not for me to Say,” and “Home for the Holidays.” He was born in Troy, N.Y. on February 28, 1928 and died on October 1, 2000, age 73, in Quogue, New York, of colon cancer.
