Inscription.
Migrating songbirds fill the air with light melodies in the Spring and Fall. These international travelers stop to rest here and feed on insects and fruit during the flight from their tropical wintering habitat to their northern breeding habitat. Some will remain here to nest. Most can be seen along the northbound route from April to June and southbound from August to September.

You might be surprised to learn that the number of songbirds is in decline. Each year fewer birds return. Habitat destruction is a major contributing factor.

The reduced numbers may be a warning that the existence of these species could someday be in peril. To ensure that their beautiful songs will never be silenced, we need to protect the wetlands, fields, and woodlands of New Jersey’s coastal habitats as well as those along the songbird migration route.

During migration, songbirds fly using a technique called bounding flight. The bird vigorously flaps its wings for a brief period to gain altitude, then folds its wings for a short descent, only to repeat the process over again. Although it is constantly rising and falling, the bird appears to maintain a constant altitude overall.
