the erection of this church
to commemorate the fact that
George Washington
worshipped in this building
and as a tribute to
the memory of
Lt. Gov. Pierre VanCortlandt
a pioneer member of
this parish
who became a
church warden in 1793.

In addition to Gen. George Washington attending services here, this church was also used as an Army hospital by French General Rochambeau in 1781-82, before and after the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia.
