Le Moulin-Rouge
The Moulin Rouge
| — | Histoire de Paris | — |
On the location of the White Queen's Ball, Oler and Zidler opened the Moulin Rouge on October 5, 1889. In the garden monkeys roam free, a huge wooden elephant stood next to the mobile orchestra stand, and on a theater stage, Moorish dancers perform. Cha-U-Kao, Jane Avril, and especially the "realist quadrille" directed by La Goulue ensured the establishment a considerable success, immortalized by the paintings and posters of Toulouse-Lautrec. On January 3, 1907, the mimodrama "Dream of Egypt" caused a resounding scandal; alongside her friend Missy, disguised under the transparent anagram of Yssim, Colette, draped in light veils, plays the leading role. Her ex-husband, Willy, co-author of the play, had to evacuate the room to boos.
