5. World’s Longest Courthouse Bench, Marker, and Courthouse.
The courthouse, the oldest courthouse standing in Georgia, was built in 1825 and restored in 1965 and again in 1982. In 1983 it was burned by arsonists who hoped to destroy evidence to be used in their trial. The courthouse was badly damaged in the fire, losing its roof and clock tower.
A new Fayette County Courthouse was built, and in 1984 the old courthouse was rebuilt at a cost of $1,000,000. It is now used by the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Development Authority.
